Our hotel window looked out onto the old port of Marseilles. A picturesque but noisy area, and also very warm, we were grateful that the hotel had double-paned windows and air conditioning.

The flea market - a 10€ taxi ride from town, was full of fresh produce, baked goods, and a jumble of flea market-style wares in a mostly Arab market.

Jacqueline's friends Michele and Elisabeth Enyier live in Marseille. They took us out on their sailboat on a tour of the islands near the city and, docked in a calm bay, we're having a glass of champagne to celebrate Jacqueline's birthday in style!

Marseille has over thirty small pretty ports tucked into nooks and crannies all over the city, giving many areas the feeling of a small port town rather than one of France's most bustling cities.
